US officials said that the reopening of an underground repository for nuclear waste in the state of New Mexico, which was scheduled in March 2016, was postponed indefinitely because of unexpected challenges. The radiation leak in the "pilot" plant to isolate the waste, and the US government, which began in a room of the waste located a kilometer underground in the center near Carlsbad, New Mexico, may display more than 20 workers of small amounts of radiation in February 2014.
The incident led to the suspension of the main operations at the site, which is the only permanent repository for the Department of Energy under the ground for certain types of radioactive waste associated with nuclear laboratories and locations of American weapons.
Dana Bryson said , acting director Carlsbad Field Office of the US Department of Energy said in a statement Friday: "We are disappointed because there we meet the original target date for the start of the waste site."He did not specify a date for the reopening of the facility.
Officials said that one of the challenges that still exist need to apply high safety from the Ministry of Energy standards and solving problems related to the ventilation system.
